How are we incorporating citations? Will they be in the exhibit?
ReplyDeleteGood question Laura. It depends on context. If you are writing an interpretive panel, no citations are needed. If you are quoting something or someone, you might try to work their name or the source into the text. So, instead of "....." (Sacramento Union 1888), you might try to write "In 1888, the Sacramento Union reported that..." If you are using the Pioneer Cemetery booklet and want to be sure you credit the author, you can do this in a couple ways (sometimes an exhibit handout with a "Recommended Reading" list serves such a purpose. Or, if you feel the need to note your heavy reliance on a source for most of the text on a didactic panel, you can place a credit line at the bottom in a smaller font. Hope that helps. Scholarly citations don't fit with the "write to an 8th grade level" dictum, so this is one context in which you'll need to fight the well-learned impulse to integrate them. Hope that helps.
